The latest FDA advisory panel on cholesterol and blood pressure, the first of a series of reports on the effectiveness of a new class of drugs that may be given to patients who have had heart disease for a long time, is expected to be voted into law by the committee on Friday.
The panel on Friday voted 12-6 to give drugs to patients who had a heart attack or stroke and who had a blood pressure of 150/80 or more.
The drug was approved in the U. S. by the Food and Drug Administration in September, and it's not clear how much it will cost to the drug companies to sell the medicine, because it's an expensive drug that's not even approved for the United States.
But because the drug hasn't been approved by the FDA, it's not as cheap as many older drugs, which are usually considered to be the most expensive drugs.
The FDA has approved two drugs on the market that are approved by the committee: a heart-disease drug called Norvasc and a cholesterol-lowering drug, Crestor, which are both approved by the FDA.
But while Norvasc is approved by the FDA for the treatment of high blood pressure, the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor was not approved by the FDA for the treatment of heart disease, and is not approved for use by patients who have heart disease.
The FDA is expected to vote at 10 to 3 on Friday's panel on the safety of the new cholesterol-lowering drug, or Zocor, and on whether or not the panel will vote on whether or not the new drug will be given to patients who have been diagnosed with heart disease.
The new drug, also called "Zetia" and approved by the FDA, is the first FDA-approved medication for patients with type 2 diabetes, a type of diabetes that causes high blood sugar and can affect how the body makes its cells.
"We have a drug for the prevention of the development of cancer that was not approved by the FDA," said Dr. Sidney Taurel, the panel's medical director.
The panel voted to recommend that the agency change the guidelines for treating heart disease to that for adults with diabetes and heart disease.
"We are very hopeful that the new guidelines will help us make this a reality," said Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital who was not involved in the panel's research.
The new guidelines include a number of recommendations for patients, which were added after the panel voted to recommend that the new guidelines not include patients who have had a heart attack or stroke within six months of starting therapy.
