NEW YORK, Nov. 24, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pfizer Inc. (Nasdaq: Pfizer) today announced that it has received U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Crestor® (rosuvastatin calcium) 10 mg tablet, manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP.
Crestor, a generic version of Crestor, is a statin drug that has been approved for the treatment of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer and inflammation. Crestor is primarily used to lower high cholesterol levels and for the prevention of heart disease in patients with high cholesterol levels. It works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that is responsible for breaking down cholesterol. By reducing levels of this enzyme, Crestor helps lower blood cholesterol levels.
“This approval represents significant progress in the development of Crestor,” said John C. Lechleiter, M. D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer. “We look forward to our next step in the development of Crestor,” added Dr. Lechleiter.
This is the first approval for Crestor in the United States, and it is the first statin drug to be approved for this indication. Crestor is available in the United States under various brand names, such as Crestor and Crestor LA, as well as under various generic names, such as Lipitor®, Zocor®, Crestor® (rosuvastatin calcium), and Crestor® (atorvastatin calcium).
“In our clinical trials, we have demonstrated an impressive safety and efficacy profile for patients with elevated cholesterol and other risk factors. This product has been an important milestone for patients, and we look forward to its FDA approval in the coming months,” stated Dr.
“These results represent significant progress in the development of Crestor, and we look forward to our next step in the development of Crestor,” added Dr.

Forward-Looking Statement

A new study finds that some people with a genetic disorder such as a specific genetic defect may have more severe reactions to statins than other people. This is true for some of the most commonly prescribed statins, including Lipitor.
“There are a lot of people who have a genetic condition that may have a severe reaction to statins,” said Dr. Steven Nissen of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “These types of people are often prescribed statins for their LDL cholesterol or high cholesterol, and these medications are not always safe or effective for these patients.”
“These types of people have very common types of statin medication called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which can be very dangerous for them,” Dr. Nissen said. “They may cause side effects like muscle pain, gastrointestinal issues, and kidney issues, so you have to look at the risks and benefits.”
The study found that about half of people with a genetic disorder who took two of the most commonly prescribed statins — Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor — experienced severe side effects.
Dr. Nissen said that while statins can cause side effects, they tend to be less risky than other medications. For instance, patients who take two of the most commonly prescribed statins who are taking statins for their LDL cholesterol can experience the side effects of the other two.
“They are generally well-tolerated, with fewer side effects than people who have a similar medical history. However, there are rare cases where they can have serious or life-threatening side effects,” he said.
Statins are a class of drugs that can be used to lower cholesterol levels, and they have a long list of side effects. These include gastrointestinal issues, which can make it difficult for patients to eat and stay active. The side effects can also make it difficult for patients to stay active, making it more difficult for them to stay healthy.
Nissen said that people who are taking a medication called Lipitor or another cholesterol-lowering medication should avoid using them for at least 3 days before starting treatment. They should also avoid taking Crestor, Zocor, and other statins unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider. They should also avoid taking Zocor if they are prescribed it for an extended period of time, and they should avoid taking it if they are already taking a statin for a long period of time.
In the study, the researchers looked at the records of more than 1,200 people who took statins for at least one year and who were taking at least one of the medicines. The researchers found that about 80% of people who had a genetic disorder were taking statins for at least one year, and about 30% had taken statins for at least one year. Statins were the most commonly prescribed medication among these people. They were also the most prescribed statin medications.
“Statins are a class of medications that are used to lower cholesterol levels in people, and they have a long list of side effects,” said Dr. Nissen. “They are the most prescribed statin medications, but they are also the most expensive. They are also the most effective.”
The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The researchers compared the side effects of different statins in the participants.

“We wanted to understand the side effects of different statins, including Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor,” said Dr. “We were also interested in the people who were taking the most commonly prescribed statins, so we wanted to see how they had the best chances for side effects.”
The research team found that about half of people who were taking the medications for at least one year and who were taking at least one of the statins suffered side effects. This was most common among people who were taking at least one of the medicines and most common among people who were taking the other two.
